The Light Within Us

We are all born with a little light within us. Sometimes we are responsible in diminishing that light within us and in others. We must be intentional in stoking that light within us and in others. We can also be intentional about being with people who stoke that light within us, so it shines bright. On this International Day of Peace, I share with you a poem that was inspired by a question during a keynote speech in a meeting last week, ‘Who stokes your light?”

I feel when we stoke each other’s light, our lights shine even brighter. The next question then is, who’s light will I stoke today?

We are all born with a little light within us.

This light uncovers hidden pain.

This light also heals that pain.

This light brings joy, and discernment.

This light frees us from credit and blame!

We are all born with a little light within us.

This light shows us the way.

This light tells us where not to go.

This light gives us the answers.

This light helps to shine and glow!

We are all born with a little light within us.

This light doesn’t depend on positions, bank accounts, or education.

This light nurtures courage, hope, and compassion.

This light leads us to profound connections.

Beyond race, color, age, nationalities or orientations.

We are all born with a little light within us.

Your brilliance does not dim my light, brother.

My glow does not dim your light, sister.

Our lights brighten each other even more.

So, shine bright, my dear, shine bright!

We are all born with a little light within us.

Healing doesn’t emerge from aggressing,

Life comes forth from union,

This light leads us to perfect peace,

This light connects the divine with the human.

Be the light, shine bright!
